Elected by the General Assembly on July 29, 2011 to a 12-year term beginning August 1, 2011, filling the vacancy created by the death of Leroy Rountree Hassell. Sworn in on August 2, 2011. Expiration of current term: July 31, 2035.

Elected chief justice in 2025 to a four-year term beginning January 1, 2026, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of S. Bernard Goodwyn.
