Born June 18, 1886 in Charlotte Courthouse, Virginia.
Died May 18, 1976 in Norfolk, Virginia.

Appointed by Governor George Peery on February 20, 1935 to fill the vacancy created by the death of Louis Spencer Epes and began his service on February 26, 1935. First elected by the General Assembly on January 24, 1936 to a 12-year term beginning February 1, 1937. Service terminated by retirement.

Succeeded Edward Wrens Hudgins as chief justice when Hudgins died on July 29, 1958. Service terminated by retirement.
