Description from finding aid: Papers include correspondence of Stafford Gorman Whittle, “chiefly business, but occasional personal items, first as a lawyer at Martinsville, Henry County, Va., later as Circuit Court Judge, 1881, Justice of the Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals, 1901-1916, and as President of that body, 1917-1919. There is much material on his election to the Supreme Court, his rejection, 1890, of a law professorship at Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Va. Of interest are a letter, 1912 June 26, William Howard Taft to Whittle; a letter, 1912 August 17, Woodrow Wilson to Whittle; and a letter, 1914 March 30, Taft to Whittle, urging him to join the American Bar Association as Taft’s nominee.”
