Born 1951 in Pennington Gap, Virginia

Appointed by Governor George Allen on May 2, 1997, to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Roscoe Bolar Stephenson and began her service on July 8, 1997. First elected by the General Assembly on January 30, 1998, to a 12-year term beginning February 1, 1998. Service terminated by retirement.

Elected chief justice on August 31, 2010, to succeed Leroy Rountree Hassell, Sr., and began her term on February 1, 2011. Service terminated by retirement.
